Tumwater staff set public schedule to compare two community‑center sites; public open house planned Feb. 4

"Capitol Boulevard [is] about 10 acres" and "the other site is twice as big, 20 acres," Director Chuck Denny told the council, summarizing relative pros and cons including central location, cleanup needs and frontage improvements at the Port‑proposed site. He said the Port site could provide an additional 10 acres of open space if developed alongside the community center.
Denny said staff and consultants have been evaluating financial and logistical tradeoffs and that more detailed cost and impact information will follow. To gather resident input before a future decision, the city plans a Parks Commission discussion on Jan. 21, a steering‑committee meeting on Jan. 29 and a public open house on Feb. 4.
Council members asked about contracts and consultant timing; Denny said the city's contract with the consultant remains active and that adjustments would be made only if additional scope is added. He also confirmed the city has not yet committed additional funds for site development and that grant and capital‑budget processes will be required for any subsequent construction choices.
The presentation did not include a formal site selection; staff said the forthcoming community feedback and a refined cost‑benefit list will inform the council when it returns with a recommendation.
