Oceanside board unveils new AP, CTE and data courses for 2026–27

"We are so pleased to share the proposed new course offerings for the 2026, 2027 school year," Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Miss Pravito said, describing additions intended to "strengthen our commitment to being a truly comprehensive high school." She listed proposed additions including AP African American Studies and two business pathway courses: AP Business with Personal Finance — described as a "brand new advanced placement course launching nationally" — and a college‑level, data‑driven course called "Decoding Data for Real‑World Decisions."
Director of social studies and business Mitch Bickman told the board the expansion builds on a decade of program growth and workforce partnerships. "In the 2026–27 school year, Oceanside will launch data analytics and AP Business with Personal Finance, one of the first of its kind," Bickman said, citing increases in dual‑enrollment and credential opportunities. The district currently offers 26 AP courses, 29 dual‑enrollment classes and about 101 elective options, presenters said.
Officials named several college partners that provide dual‑enrollment options, including Nassau Community College, St. John's University, Long Island University and Syracuse University. Presenters highlighted former students who used the district's programs to move into cybersecurity, mechanical engineering and nursing‑related college pathways as examples of the district's postsecondary preparation.
The board heard that the CTE (career and technical education) business pathway will support industry credentials and work‑based learning — including campus visits and internships — enabling students to earn college credits and workforce certifications before graduation. Bickman cited examples such as Microsoft Office Specialist credentials and real‑estate exam preparation as practical outcomes of the expanded offerings.
Superintendent Dr. Harrington framed the proposals as part of budget planning and preparation; the new courses will be included in the district's budget discussions for next year. No final approvals for individual courses were recorded in the meeting minutes beyond board support for placing the course proposals on the agenda for consideration.
The next procedural step is the board's formal agenda vote process; district officials said they would return with approval items during budget adoption and course‑offerings review periods.
