Senior services says Meals on Wheels funding unchanged; SNAP rule changes could drive demand

Chuck Jackson, department director for Wayne County Senior Services, updated the committee on Meals on Wheels and related senior nutrition funding. Jackson said current funding levels are the same as last fiscal year and that funds are available through Jan. 30, but the department expects potential increased demand if SNAP changes reduce enrollment among adults aged roughly 54–64 who face new work requirements.
"We anticipate that there may be more people actually seeking Meals on Wheels services as a result of the changes to SNAP," Jackson said, adding that the department cannot yet quantify the expected increase. Jackson said there are efforts to advocate for increased Older Americans Act funding but no increase has been approved.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about dates and whether current approvals cover future conferences; Jackson confirmed the discussed line-item movement was a reallocation within the senior-services administrative budget to pay for travel and expenses related to an attended conference in 2025, not an advance approval for 2026 events.
The committee accepted the update and requested continued notice of evolving SNAP-related needs and any required budget adjustments.
