The Coffey County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 1 discussed previously raised options for vacation payout and employee leave. After hearing department-head input, the board declined to authorize a general vacation buyout and directed that the existing policy remain in force for 2026.
Staff described two staff scenarios: some departments plan and schedule vacations through the year to avoid year-end accumulation, while others face operational challenges if multiple employees take large blocks of time at once. The board agreed that department heads should manage vacation scheduling and that any exception to the general policy beyond the approved extension should be brought to the board’s attention.
The board agreed to allow a limited administrative extension—staff described it as an extension up to 90 days into the next calendar year for employees whose balances exceed policy caps—so that affected employees are not immediately forced to use or forfeit time. Commissioners directed personnel staff to draft a memo to be included with year-end pay stubs clarifying the policy and the extension.
What’s next: Personnel will circulate the memo with paychecks and department heads will be reminded that they have the authority to approve scheduling to avoid operational disruption.
