Coffey County delays closing on surplus property at 405 Neosho, schedules new public hearing

Coffey County officials told the Board of Commissioners on Dec. 1 that a pending sale of surplus county property at 405 Neosho could not close immediately because of two outstanding issues: (1) Atmos Energy needed to perform pressure testing and confirm gas service, and (2) title and deed records contained inconsistent legal descriptions that must be corrected before marketable title can pass.
County staff explained that historical documents included multiple references with numeric and boundary errors (for example, missing a north/south wall description and misstated footages) and that the title company and county attorney would need about two to three weeks to file documents in district court to cure the errors. Staff said buyers had been kept informed and that title work and a pending gas inspection were actively being handled.
Because of those contingencies the commission voted to publish a new notice for the surplus-property public hearing on Monday, Dec. 22, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. During the Dec. 1 hearing there were no public comments. Staff said that once the title corrections and service checks are complete the county can proceed toward finalization.
What’s next: County staff will continue to work with the title company and buyer; the commission asked that a new notice be published and that any material updates be brought back to the board.
