Local nonprofit 'In Her Footsteps' expands care kits and teacher supply stations across Jefferson County Schools

Gilles said the nonprofit packs 'Empower Her Kids' care kits containing feminine hygiene items, and confidence kits with soap, deodorant and toothpaste, which are kept discreetly with school nurses or counselors. She also described teacher supply stations placed in every county school to cover the five most common out‑of‑pocket teacher expenses; funding came from United Way and the Miranni Foundation and local businesses have adopted schools to keep supplies stocked.
Gilles said the group's January 3 'bundle up and pack up' event aims to supplement school supplies midyear and to distribute warm clothing. "We are in every single school," she said, and reported that last year the program served 179 students from 81 families; this year the goal is 300 students and she said 134 families in Jefferson County were already signed up.
Board members thanked Gilles and acknowledged the nonprofit's community partnership role; no formal action was required.
