GreenTree honors bystander and first responders after Sept. 1 cardiac arrest

GreenTree Borough presented certificates Dec. 1 to a bystander and first responders who used an AED and advanced life support to revive a resident who suffered cardiac arrest at Green Tree Nature Center on Sept. 1.
David Turkel, chief of operations for Medical Rescue Team South, told the council Dec. 1 that on Sept. 1 a retired police commander collapsed while walking at Green Tree Nature Center and that a friend, John Fisher, recognized the emergency and called 911. Turkel said officers Ryan Bocce and Frank Zane immediately applied an automated external defibrillator and that subsequent Mercer EMS interventions restored circulation and consciousness.
“Your prompt and thoughtful actions directly put your view to the outcome of that day,” Turkel said as he commended Fisher, the responding officers and paramedics. The council presented certificates recognizing the lifesaving chain of events to Fisher (recognized in absentia), Officer Ryan Bocce, Officer Frank Zane, Paramedic Matthew Coleman, EMT Richard Weisner, Paramedic Kenny Pickard and Paramedic Ken Ratha.
The chief also introduced Cheryl Rickens of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association and explained the organization’s role in promoting AED placement and public education. Turkel and council members used the presentation to emphasize early CPR, early defibrillation and prompt EMS response as the key links necessary for survival.
The presentation concluded with brief remarks thanking the bystander and the multiagency response. No formal council action followed the award presentation; it was ceremonial and intended to raise public awareness about AEDs and early recognition of cardiac arrest.
