Speaker 1 told the finance committee that one of the superintendent's proposals contained in the CAPA materials is school consolidation and that the district will present detailed data at a growth and planning meeting scheduled for the next evening at 6 p.m.
"If you are very interested in school consolidations and how many schools are consolidated or not consolidated and which ones those are, all of the data for that will be presented at tomorrow night's growth and planning," she said.
Participants discussed what consolidation could mean for staffing and facilities. Committee members and Speaker 2 noted that some campuses will require capital work such as HVAC replacement and other upgrades, and that consolidation can result in teacher displacement even when teachers remain employed in the district. Speaker 2 and others suggested programmatic options — school‑within‑a‑school or immersion programs — as ways to preserve programs in the face of consolidation.
Speaker 1 asked breakout teams to note whether they preferred a one‑year or two‑year timeline for implementing changes; she said consultant materials did not recommend a two‑year plan because, based on the numbers presented, a two‑year approach could reduce the fund balance below a 60‑day target.
No consolidation decisions were made at the committee meeting; the growth and planning workshop was presented as the venue for data presentation and community discussion.
