Residents urge county to back 'Lights and Liberty' holiday display; special call planned

Local residents and business representatives asked the Liberty County Commissioners Court to support a holiday‑lighting program for the courthouse and annex that they say would draw visitors and generate revenue for downtown businesses.
Lee Chambers introduced the proposal and asked the court to hold a special called meeting Friday, Nov. 21, to consider approving the installation. "The courthouse seems to be a very dark center of all that," Chambers said, urging county partnership and a proclamation recognizing donors. He said organizers wanted to solicit donations from companies and suggested working with the press to promote sponsorship.
Carrie, who identified herself as representing First Face of Texas and Christmas Connections, described the planned decorations — wrapping six live oaks and lighting the west side of the annex — and said the program is insured and professional. "My sales that day alone increased about a 150% just from 1 day on a Saturday," Carrie said, arguing the display brings revenue to local retailers.
Commissioners and staff discussed purchase versus donation models, noting the county would own any lights purchased and that ongoing maintenance, storage and installation would be part of the vendor’s responsibilities. Carrie said several vendors have offered donated equipment or services and that the county’s initial purchase would reduce long‑term cost. The judge said the court would take up the formal vote at the Friday special call meeting.
