Senior Services Commission reports expanded programs and La Mirinda Village partnership

Terry Black, chair of Lafayette's Senior Services Commission, presented the commission’s annual update to the council on Dec. 8, describing progress implementing the city’s Age Friendly Action Plan and an active collaboration with La Mirinda Village that expanded services and membership support for income‑qualified residents.
Black said the commission’s call to action contains 35 goals and more than 200 action items; the commission is seeking partners to help implement them. Programs highlighted included walking groups, guided birdwatching, increased social participation opportunities at the Lafayette Library and Community Center, and an expanded ‘spirit van’ service that staff reported provided roughly 1,700 additional trips this year. Molly Cohen, senior services coordinator, and Ricky (La Mirinda spirit van) described how the partnership increased program days at the library, added classes and supported transportation to medical appointments.
Commissioners said a volunteer fair is in early planning to connect nonprofits and prospective volunteers and noted the commission will join an AARP webinar, "Going Digital," to share Lafayette’s age‑friendly experience. The commission encouraged residents and organizations to review the action plan online and help implement priority items.
No formal council action was required; councilmembers thanked the commission and praised the La Mirinda partnership.
