Union County commissioners elect Brian Helms chair, Christina Helms vice chair

The Union County Board of Commissioners elected Commissioner Brian Helms as chair and Commissioner Christina Helms as vice chair during its Dec. 8 regular meeting.
County Manager Matthews opened nominations under state statute, saying the board elects officers at the first December meeting. Commissioner Brian Helms was nominated without opposition and confirmed by voice vote. Commissioner Christina Helms was then nominated and confirmed as vice chair.
Before the formal transition, the board recognized outgoing Chair Commissioner Merrill with a plaque for her service. After the oaths and brief remarks, Chair Brian Helms assumed the gavel and thanked colleagues and the public for their support.
The leadership change was the opening business of the session; Matthews and other commissioners used the remarks to note the board’s priorities going into the budget cycle and to encourage public input.
