Lexington homeowners showcase rapid ADU installation and family benefits at state event

LEXINGTON, Mass. — At a state event in Lexington, homeowners Mark and Linda Adler described living arrangements made possible by a newly installed accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on their property and encouraged other homeowners to consider the option.

Mark Adler said working with Backyard ADUs produced a “completely customized solution” and that neighbors have been supportive. He said the ADU has allowed his daughter and grandchildren to live next door and made everyday tasks — such as getting kids to school — easier.

Linda Adler said the space exceeded their expectations: "We were a little bit worried about the fact that our new space would seem cramped after being in a larger home, but it's not. It's really been perfect. We don't get in each other's way, and we still have space for ourselves." She described the unit as two bedrooms and two bathrooms with a full-size kitchen and said it was craned into place and completed in about four months.

Both Adlers said the quick timeline and limited onsite disruption contrasted with other local builds that took more than a year. Their testimonial served as a practical demonstration during the governor's broader ADU announcement about design resources, incentives and loan products.

The homeowners thanked Backyard ADUs and local officials for helping make the project possible. The event also included remarks from state officials about a forthcoming ADU design challenge, prize awards and construction financing to help more homeowners undertake similar projects.
