County highlights Career Cafe and CTE ties as part of workforce strategy

Columbia County commissioners and staff used part of the Sept. 18 meeting to highlight workforce development efforts, including a recent Career Cafe and efforts to strengthen CTE and apprenticeship pathways.
Speaker 3 reported that the Nov. 7 Career Cafe matched six employers with 27 students in concentrated 1:1 sessions; employers provided positive feedback and some asked for follow‑up visits. Speaker 10 and Speaker 11 (college representative) described articulation agreements with Florida Gateway College that allow students completing certain high‑school CTE programs to carry college credits into postsecondary programs.
Board members emphasized the need to expose non‑CTE students to career pathways and suggested sector‑based Career Cafe follow‑ups during CTE month in February. Speakers noted existing programs—automotive, welding, HVAC and CDL courses—and urged closer collaboration between economic development staff and educators to connect local employers with students.
Speakers also raised the need to measure outcomes: Speaker 9 asked for metrics to assess whether conference attendance and other initiatives are producing sustained economic gains. The board asked staff to compile implementation steps and success measures to report back following the planned workshop on incentive policy.
Next steps: staff will continue follow‑up with employers from the Career Cafe, explore sector‑based events in February and work with Florida Gateway College and local schools to expand CTE access and articulation agreements.
