Public commenters urge safer school-zone enforcement, stronger local water standards and clearer budget engagement

During the public speaking portion of the Dec. 8 meeting, three residents highlighted separate concerns.
Anna Campos urged stronger enforcement of distracted-driving laws around schools and greater coordination between the city and school district on enforcement, education and awareness campaigns. "I'm asking today for stronger enforcement of the driving laws, especially in the school zones," she said, noting recent incidents of students and a parent being struck while crossing correctly.
Lani Susana, a registered nurse and health policy advocate, raised concerns about agricultural nitrates and other contaminants in the Raccoon Rivers and proposed that the city consider stricter, mandatory local water standards to protect drinking water and public health.
Carol Maher, a downtown resident, described participating in a ward-based budget kickoff session and urged the city to restore a public Q&A log on the budget website so residents can see submitted questions and official answers during the process.
Council members acknowledged the issues and directed staff to follow up where appropriate (for example, staff noted they would look into requests about pedestrian treatments on Second Avenue).
