St. Bernard Parish School Board honors 13 Special Olympics athletes who advanced to state competition

The St. Bernard Parish School Board recognized 13 students who qualified for the state Special Olympics during its Nov. 11 meeting.
Presenter Joe Cipollone described the district’s Special Olympics program as a statewide model and praised the students’ sportsmanship and teamwork. Cipollone reported the group’s results at the state games: eight gold medals, six silver medals, one bronze, one fourth-place and two fifth-place ribbons.
Cipollone called the students "a huge, prideful moment for families and staff" and invited individual athletes forward to receive congratulations from the board. The board and several members offered congratulations and asked parents to stand so the board could recognize them as well.
Names singled out during recognition included Tyshae Reed, Tyrique Brennan, Jaden Butler, Terrielle DeMall, Sarah Hendricks, Mia Mitchell and Dravin Bagenauer. Board members emphasized pride in the students and community support for Special Olympics activities.
