High Point council approves proclamations, board appointments and continues demolition hearing to Feb. 16, 2026

At its November meeting the High Point City Council read and approved proclamations recognizing November 2025 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month and Prematurity Awareness Month and adopted routine appointments and reappointments to local boards.

Mayor Cyril Jefferson read a lung cancer proclamation noting national and local mortality and screening statistics and urged residents to learn about screening for high‑risk individuals. He also read a proclamation recognizing World Prematurity Day and the work of March of Dimes to reduce preterm birth.

On board business the council confirmed the reappointment of David Wall to the High Point Alcoholic Beverage Control Board for a term effective immediately through Nov. 15, 2027, and appointed James B. Waddell to the Citizens Advisory Council with a term expiring May 31, 2027. The council also approved the added agenda appointment of Sandra Bethea to the Human Relations Commission for a term effective immediately and expiring Nov. 1, 2027.

Code Enforcement Manager Kaylee Parish opened the public hearing on a demolition ordinance for 502 Academy Street, reporting that an order to repair or demolish was issued on May 28, 2025 with a compliance due date of June 30, 2025 and that "as of 10/31/2025 no repairs have been completed or permits obtained to repair or demolish the dwelling." Staff requested the hearing be continued to the Feb. 16, 2026 city council meeting; Councilmember Holmes moved to continue, the motion was seconded and the council approved the continuance.

Other agenda items, routine consent items and community announcements (including upcoming tree lightings, a STEM gym and art complex groundbreaking, and a public art installation in the Southwest Renewal area) were handled without extended discussion. The council adjourned after taking these actions.
