Ellington board elects officers, approves budget calendar and school trip; policy FMLA gets second read

Returning from a brief caucus, the Ellington School District Board of Education moved to appoint the executive committee for the next two years. A motion to appoint Carrie Scioscia as board chair passed on a unanimous roll call. Board members then nominated and confirmed Miriam Underwood as vice chair. A separate roll call confirmed Jen Mullen as board secretary after several recorded 'no' votes; the motion carried.

The board also accepted with regret the retirement of John Chaves, a technology‑education instructor at Ellington High School, effective Jan. 30, 2026.
Board chair and members emphasized adherence to bylaws and confidentiality around personnel matters; the board noted the superintendent is on FMLA leave and an investigation is pending and said those matters would follow established processes.
