Magnolia ISD certifies bond election results after narrow defeats; parents urge May re-run
Summary
Trustees certified Montgomery County’s Nov. 4 bond returns showing narrow losses on propositions; parents and a facilities‑committee co-chair urged the board to call another election (suggesting May 2026) and to boost parental turnout after Prop A lost by about 126 votes.
Magnolia Independent School District trustees formally canvassed the Nov. 4 bond election and declared the official results after hearing several residents urge the board to put the measures before voters again.
During public comment, Rachel Irvin, who served as co‑chair of the district’s facility planning committee, said the district’s needs remain despite the ballot defeat and asked trustees to consider a May 2026 bond election. “The bottom line is that the needs of Magnolia ISD do not disappear because the bond was voted against,” Irvin said. She told the board the district enrolls “over 15,000 students, yet only 2,100 parents voted on the election, and Prop A only lost by a 126 votes.”
Two other speakers, Brian DeNoble and Stacy Anzick, also urged trustees to place the full bond package back on a near‑term ballot and to increase outreach to parents. DeNoble asked the board to “please consider putting all 3 bonds back on the very next election,” while Anzick urged leaders to “tell the story of your kid, and why you're voting yes for the bond.”
The board read results provided by the Montgomery County Elections Division. The chair reported totals for each proposition as read aloud at the meeting: Proposition A — approximately 11,296 total votes (reported margin described in public comment as a 126‑vote difference); Proposition B — 11,265 total votes with about 4,635 for and 6,630 against; Proposition C — 11,243 total votes with about 4,446 for and 6,797 against. The board then moved to approve canvassing the returns and formally declare the results. “Motion by Jay, seconded by David,” the chair said; after the vote the chair announced the motion passed.
Trustees responded to the public comments by thanking volunteers and acknowledging frustration at the narrow margin. One trustee noted the district had “7 to 800 people in this room tonight” and said the board should look for more opportunities to put bond information before parents. Several trustees emphasized that the need for facility upgrades and capacity planning persists regardless of the election outcome.
