The Madison County Board of Zoning Appeals voted unanimously to grant Edward Williams a two-year extension on a previously approved variance for a small, grandfathered parcel on LA Road (tax map 50-21).
Alan, a county staff member, recapped the parcel’s history: the board granted a setback variance in October 2019 with two conditions (construction within two years and nontransferability), and a subsequent owner sought the same variance in October 2021. That approval was time-limited; the variance expired before construction began. Williams told the board he intends to build but cannot provide a firm start date.
Board members discussed the time-limited nature of the prior approvals and the need to avoid an indefinite open-ended condition. Board member (speaker 4) moved to grant a two-year extension consistent with the original variance conditions; Board member (speaker 3) seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The extension continues existing conditions: the variance remains time-limited and subject to the same setback and size limitations discussed in earlier approvals. Board members encouraged Williams to proceed with permitting and construction within the extension period to avoid future expirations.
