Rio Grande City marks 35 years of public library service; expansion invoice approved

The Rio Grande City Commission celebrated the Rio Grande City Public Library’s 35th anniversary during its Dec. 10 meeting and presented longtime library employee Norma Fultz with special recognition for more than three decades of service.
Fultz told the commission the library recorded more than 22,000 visitors between January and November 2025 and that the facility serves “over 15,000 residents” while holding more than 18,000 volumes and digital resources. Fultz said staff and volunteers are preparing for the library’s annual Storybook Christmas and other outreach events.
Separately, the commission approved payment of invoice #3 for the library expansion project in the amount of $21,213.50 and was informed the remaining contract balance is $91,553. Contract and construction oversight were described as city-managed after the building donation and subsequent renovations in 2005, and a new facility’s walls are reported as up with roof work beginning.
City staff said library programming includes digital resources, free Wi‑Fi and educational events for all ages; no changes to library staffing or operating hours were announced at the meeting.
What happens next: Work on the library expansion continues; invoice payments will proceed as approved and staff will continue programming and outreach during the holiday season.
