The West Oso ISD Board approved a district budget amendment to refinish and repair the West Oso Junior High gym floor after staff reported severe deterioration and safety concerns.
A district staff member, identified in the transcript as Cheryl, described the floor as heavily marked, peeling and in some places exposing bare wood. Cheryl told trustees contractors will strip the existing coatings down to bare wood and noted that routine maintenance will be required to preserve the new finish. "It was really bad... I didn't even want fans or parents coming in the gym," she said, describing visible pills and peeling paint that prompted the district to stop some on-site activities.
Trustees discussed maintenance responsibilities, the frequency of contractor follow-up and the need to train custodial and coaching staff on proper cleaning protocols (for example, avoiding water or incorrect mops on the finished floor). Several trustees said the project was overdue and that ongoing accountability will be required to protect the district's investment.
Trustee Shirley Jordan moved and Trustee Gonzales seconded the budget amendment; the motion passed 6-0. Administration said contractor work was underway and scheduled to return with expected completion dates and maintenance guidance for staff.
