Madison County board adopts FY27 budget calendar with public hearings set for late March and April

Madison County supervisors on Dec. 9 adopted the FY27 budget calendar that sets a schedule for departmental requests, school presentations and public hearings ahead of the county's April budget adoption.
Finance lead Miss Warren outlined the calendar and requested its adoption that evening. Key dates include issuance of budget instructions to departments and outside agencies on Dec. 15; department returns due Jan. 9; internal meetings Jan. 12—Jan. 30; school public hearing Feb. 9 with the school system aiming to send its approved draft to the county on March 9 (and a revised draft, if needed, on March 19); three county budget work sessions in February; a public hearing on tax rates March 31; and final budget approval scheduled for April 14 with appropriation on May 26.
Board members discussed joint meetings with the school board as a way to improve communication during the budget cycle and agreed on multiple work sessions to review revenue projections, the capital improvement plan and debt financing. A motion to approve the calendar was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. Supervisors emphasized an expedited review process to allow sufficient time for school and county coordination ahead of the March public hearings.
The board scheduled additional budget work sessions and tasked staff to coordinate with the school superintendent and treasurer on revenue projections and deadlines.
