Council approves no-left-turn signage near Bell Place schools, asks sheriff to help with enforcement

The Iberia Parish Council on Nov. 19 approved a resolution asking the parish to install a time-limited no-left-turn restriction at the intersection near Bell Place Elementary and Bell Place Middle School to reduce traffic backups and improve student safety.
James Trujillo, who introduced the measure, said the school board requested the restriction to prevent vehicle backups on Huizwa Road during morning and afternoon pickup times. "It's for safety and for the kids getting out with the buses," a council member said during discussion. Several council members asked that the sheriff be involved in enforcement; the council agreed to proceed with the sign matching school hours and days Monday through Friday.
Members said the school board provided an exact schedule in the packet and that public works would post the sign with stated hours. The motion carried.
What happens next: Public Works and the sheriff's office will coordinate on posting and enforcement; the formal sign hours will reflect the school day times submitted by the school board and recorded in the resolution packet.
