Parks and recreation staff used the council workshop to review a year of program activity, facility improvements and staffing changes, and to preview upcoming projects and events.
The department said aquatics programs were affected by weather and a temporary card‑processing outage that reduced operating days, but noted that some pools and programs showed increased participation. Staff described partnerships with the American Red Cross and community groups — including an NAACP scholarship initiative — to expand swim lesson access for populations at higher drowning risk.
Staff highlighted recent playground installations and restorations across the city, improvements at West Temple Park and Miller skate pad, artificial turf at select playgrounds, and a set of renovations and accessibility upgrades to multiple recreation centers. Several projects — including construction at Lyons Junction, a guard building, and other park improvements — were presented as nearing completion or in active construction.
The department also previewed community events including the annual Turkey Trot and increased tournament activity for youth sports. Staff said they have filled previously vacant positions in key programs and named internal staff achievements and certifications that support program stability.
Council thanked staff for the update and asked follow‑up questions about maintenance funding and scheduling for remaining work.
