District lauded for 32-year clean audit record after GFOA and ASBO awards

During its Oct. 28 meeting the St. Bernard Parish School Board recognized the district business office for receiving awards from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) and the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) for excellence in financial reporting for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024.
David Fernandez told the board the certificates reflect a group effort across the business department and district staff. "Again, our district has been notified that we were awarded the certificate of government finance officers association and the association of school business officials international," Fernandez said.
Board members praised the achievement and several noted a long record without audit exceptions. One board member said the district has held the award for about 32 consecutive years and highlighted the difficulty of maintaining a clean audit record over a multi‑million-dollar operation, particularly through post‑Katrina rebuilding.
Board member Mister Long noted the timing as voters approach a millage election, saying the department’s record is "good news" to bring to the community ahead of the vote. The recognition was received with applause; no formal action on the awards was required.
