Council recognizes Harmony Express and proclaims Rosa Parks Day

At the start of the Dec. 2 meeting the council presented a proclamation recognizing Harmony Express, a barbershop chorus founded in 2008. Members of the chorus performed two songs for the council, introduced themselves and described community performances at venues including senior centers, churches and schools.
In the afternoon the council held a joint proclamation for Rosa Parks Day. Council Member Laurie Ann Sales, County Executive Mark Elrich, the Office of Human Rights Director Jim Stowe and the Department of Transportation director each gave remarks. Stowe elaborated on Parks’ role in civil-rights work beyond the widely known bus incident; he noted Parks’ NAACP work supporting women who had experienced violence. County Executive Elrich referenced the county’s zero-fare bus policy adopted earlier in the year as part of advancing transportation equity.
Both proclamations were read and presented during the meeting; the Rosa Parks proclamation included a call to confront intolerance and advance transportation equity as a civil-rights priority.
