CRCSD approves 12 new high-school courses; arts and events scheduled in December and January

The Cedar Rapids Community School District announced approval of 12 proposed high school courses for next school year, offering students expanded options. The courses named on the podcast included astronomy; automotive technology 1 and 2; AP business with personal finance; AP cybersecurity; career education exploration with special education; earth systems; foundations of music theory; medical terminology; intermediate Spanish 1 and 2; public speaking; and guitar 1.
District hosts noted that although the courses have been approved, actual offerings will depend on factors such as building budgets, teacher availability and meeting minimum student interest thresholds.
The hosts also promoted upcoming student activities: the district Poetry Out Loud competition for ninth- and tenth-graders will be held at Kennedy High School’s Black Box Theatre on Jan. 8 from 9 to 11 a.m.; students must register by Dec. 17. The podcast also highlighted community events including Washington's Coco and Carol's holiday performances on Dec. 13 and Jefferson High School's 13th annual free holiday dinner on Dec. 17 from 5 to 8 p.m., prepared and served by Jefferson students and staff. The Jefferson event will include displays on programs and renovation updates in the West Gym.
