Commission hears community project updates: Bronson Park garden beds, cemetery work and tour planning

Members of the Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Commission on Dec. 10 heard a package of community-project updates, including a request from Kalamazoo in Bloom to endorse (not financially) ceremonial plantings in Bronson Park, a cemetery-committee status report and a preview of next year's historic-tour plans.
A presenter asked the commission to endorse three ceremonial "Three Sisters" plantings (corn, beans and squash) to be held in Bronson Park next spring and to allow the commission to publicize the events. Commissioners probed what an "endorsement" would legally permit, with one commissioner saying, "The word endorsement just inherently makes me very nervous as a government employee, that we'd be endorsing anything in any capacity," and staff offering to check city rules and report back. The presenter clarified that the garden was intended as a one-year ceremonial project and that the sign might become permanent while the planting would not.
The cemetery committee summarized work in 2025, including community outreach, draft publications, potential cemetery tours (Riverside and Mountain Home) and interest in restoring the Sexton House at Mountain Home. The committee said publications and tour foundations were largely ready, but any monetary support or budget items for partners (Friends of Historic Kalamazoo Cemeteries) would be considered at the January meeting.
The historic tours subcommittee previewed four goals for 2026, aiming to complete two tours and supply materials for public programming. Commissioners encouraged continued outreach and asked that any funding requests come back with explicit budget line items.
Staff agreed to research rules around formal endorsement/publicity and to bring budget proposals connected to cemetery partnerships and publications to the commission in January for approval.
