Student council, athletics and arts highlighted; National Merit semifinalist acknowledged

Student representative Jackson told the Norris School District 160 Board of Education that fall activities are “continuing strong,” listing recent team results and upcoming events.

Jackson said the football team opened with a 42-0 win and will play Beatrice in a yearly game supporting cancer survivors; cross-country is headed to state on Oct. 15; the softball team stood at 19-9 and is hosting district competition; volleyball was undefeated entering its match with Elkhorn. He also described student-council fundraising and community partnerships, FFA range-judging qualifiers, FBLA and HOSA activities, and the high-school musical, Mary Poppins, which remains open to the public this weekend.

Superintendent and administrators used the reports to highlight academics and safety. Building staff reported that about 85% of students are above the 40th percentile in math at the building level, and administrators described a recent intruder drill that followed a safety audit recommendation to have secretaries make emergency announcements. Staff also noted 98% parent-conference participation when in-person and virtual attendance are combined.

The board also recognized Jackson as a National Merit semifinalist. Jackson described the semifinalist process: the qualifying test, an essay and transcript submission, and validation of test scores with the SAT or ACT. He said he submitted required materials and that counselors are assisting with the finalist application.

No action was required on these reports. The board proceeded to regular agenda items after a brief question-and-answer period.
