Placer County’s probation department won board approval Dec. 9 for a negotiated amendment to its Tyler Technologies case‑management contract that adds artificial‑intelligence tools, data analytics, field mobile access for officers and an automated room‑check system for the juvenile detention facility.
Probation Chief Brian Pass and senior IT staff said the additions are intended to automate repetitive work, deliver faster access to critical information, improve documentation quality and support case supervision in the field. Dean Dittman, senior IT analyst, told supervisors the AI tools are “not intended to replace staff,” but to free officers for direct supervision and rehabilitation work.
Donovan Hazen, division manager, described analytics and mobile supervision platforms that will centralize data, create dashboards for operational decision‑making and allow officers to access case files and dictate notes while in the field. The amendment also funds a room‑check system designed to strengthen documentation and youth safety compliance in the juvenile facility.
The board approved the amendment after public comment and staff review; the action establishes a new five‑year term and sets maximum amounts for the contract and aggregate life‑of‑agreement obligations. Supporters said the tools align the department with national best practices for supervision and data‑driven deployment of resources.
Opponents in public comment were limited at the hearing; board members signaled general support for technology that reduces administrative burdens while asking staff to monitor impacts, costs and privacy implications as systems are implemented.
