The Buckeye Valley Local School District board took multiple procedural and membership votes at its Dec. 18 meeting.
Amend agenda: Trustees voted to amend the agenda to pull item 5.9 (OSBA membership) for separate discussion and action; the roll call passed by a majority (4–1).
Suspend bylaw 0 1 3 1: The board voted to suspend bylaw 0 1 3 1 for the meeting so that policy 8805 could be moved from a first reading to a second reading. Trustees debated whether suspending the bylaw would bypass standard notice and committee procedures; the suspension was approved by roll call (4–1).
Consent items: The board approved consent agenda personnel and program items — including custodial hires, bus/van driver hires (including John Popovich as a van driver), supplemental coaching assignments and an unpaid temporary assignment for a teacher completing internship requirements — by roll call (5–0).
OSBA membership: After discussion of the $10,714 dues and the organization’s training and legal resources, the board voted to approve annual membership in the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA). The motion passed by roll call, 3–2, with two trustees voting against renewing membership.
Nut graf: Several votes were procedural — amending the agenda and suspending a bylaw — taken to allow immediate consideration of policy 8805. The decision to renew OSBA membership split the board and drew questions about cost versus training and legal benefits.
The board also approved the modified agenda and minutes earlier in the meeting, and set next steps for organizational scheduling in January.
