The Duarte Unified School District Board of Education elected Reyna Diaz president and Dr. Laura Hasso vice president and clerk during its Dec. 16 organizational meeting, moving through several liaison and representative appointments in a single session.
Board members opened nominations for the 2025-26 school year and, after a motion and second, elected Diaz by unanimous voice vote. Following the handover, the board nominated and elected Hasso as vice president and clerk. President Diaz presided as the board then filled liaison roles to local organizations and county committees, including naming Tom Reyes to represent the board to the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association and to the county committee on school district organization.
The actions were procedural and decided largely without extended debate. The board recorded multiple voice votes and congratulations following each appointment. In a separate set of appointments, members were assigned to the Duarte Education Foundation, the City of Duarte Parks and Recreation Commission and the City of Duarte Public Safety Commission.
“These appointments will help us strengthen relationships in the community,” a board member said during the session, and members thanked outgoing board president Dr. James Finley for his service before the reorganization.
The board’s reorganization completes the annual assignment of officers and liaisons; no contested races or roll-call vote breakdowns were recorded in the transcript for the officer elections. The board signaled it will continue its governance work in an upcoming workshop scheduled for Jan. 24, 2026.
