Board approves partial midyear funding for one register of deeds deputy position

After discussion about cross-training, workload spikes and service impacts, the board approved a midyear amendment motion of $21,302 (to come from general-fund contingency) to fund one deputy for the remainder of the fiscal year. Commissioners and the register said the office would return at budget time for additional staffing if warranted.
The register explained the office’s service mission — vital records, marriage and other certificates — and said limited staffing can create bottlenecks that delay citizens’ access to essential documents. Commissioners noted the action is a midyear compromise intended to address immediate staffing pressure while reserving larger decisions for the budget process.
