County information-technology staff told the Surry County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 1 that the county needs to consolidate two storage-area networks to restore redundancy and reduce duplicated software and support costs.
Martha, identified in the agenda as MIS director, described the project as a multi-step migration to move county and public-safety storage onto a single Pure system and asked the board to approve a statement of work with vendor Data Network Solutions (DNS) to complete the migration. Martha said the county currently has no redundancy between Dobson and Mount Airy for critical data and cited a vendor quote for increasing drive capacity of about $209,000. She said the county’s existing lease payment for the old equipment ends in February and that without consolidation the county risks having to renew or replace expiring equipment.
Commissioners asked whether consolidation would generate savings; Martha and staff said the county would reduce duplicated licensing and support costs (VMware and related agreements) and that combining the equipment should reduce recurring expenditures. Commissioners moved to approve the request and specified that funding should come from the general-fund contingency. The motion passed by voice vote.
The board did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript. Staff said the next steps are vendor engagement, completion of a statement of work, and scheduling migration work to occur before the next major support renewal.
