Commission votes first reading to designate 558 Bel Tree St. as local historic landmark

The Dunedin City Commission voted unanimously on first reading Nov. 20 to designate 558 Bel Tree Street a local historic landmark under Ordinance 25‑10. City planner Frances Lyons presented photos and architectural details, describing the property as a craftsman‑style bungalow with fluted porch columns, novelty siding and interior woodwork. Lyons told commissioners the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee reviewed the application Oct. 9, 2025, and recommended approval.
During questions, staff clarified that the local designation applies to the property's exterior only and does not restrict interior alterations. "We only focus, as a result of the landmark designation, it only focuses on the exterior structure," Lyons said.
The property owners spoke at the meeting to thank the commission and to ask that both the house and a nearby live sand oak be protected. The owner told the city arborist identified the tree as "over 200 years old" and said it may be the oldest live sand oak in Pinellas County.
Commissioners praised the application and welcomed the new residents. Commissioner Dugard made the motion to approve first reading and Commissioner Walker seconded. The commission voted Aye — Commissioner Sandbergen, Commissioner Walker, Commissioner Dugard and Mayor Franey — and the motion passed unanimously. Staff said second reading is scheduled for Dec. 18, 2025.
No amendments or conditions to the first reading were recorded at the Nov. 20 meeting.
