Kindergartners get balance bikes after TAP Performance grant to district

District presenters and staff introduced a Strider/balance-bike grant awarded by TAP Performance at the start of the Oct. 28 Lincoln Public Schools board meeting.
Staff said the bikes arrived roughly a month earlier and generated excitement among kindergartners who had not seen them before. Presenters explained that balance or Strider bikes prioritize balance skills over pedaling, remove training wheels, and allow children to learn to control stopping with their feet while practicing mounting, dismounting and helmet safety. Several speakers noted the bikes can later accept pedals so children can transition as their confidence and skill increase.
Presenters described classroom activities such as obstacle courses and supervised scooting around the room to build confidence. The board and presenters thanked TAP Performance for the grant and noted the opportunity to introduce these lifetime skills at an early age.
