Board approves part‑time assistant for Veterans Service Office to handle growing caseload

Dave Kearns, introduced as the veteran service officer, said the office currently serves about 3,500 Dearborn County veterans and also assists veterans from neighboring counties and Greater Cincinnati. He said workload has increased over the past two to three years and that a part‑time assistant would prevent any drop in service when he is out of the office and create a path for eventual succession.
Kearns also noted recent state legislation that will increase governance, training and reporting obligations for veteran service officers, which he said will add to the workload. Commissioners voiced support for the request, discussed timing for council budget requests and agreed the office would coordinate with counsel and county staff to secure funding through the county council in March or May.
A motion to approve funding for a part‑time assistant carried by voice vote.
