The Graham County Board of Supervisors approved a higher entry salary placement for a newly hired detention registered nurse to improve recruitment and retain experienced clinical staff.
Brian Douglas of the county health department told the board the county had advertised for a detention nurse for about two-and-a-half years with few qualified applicants; he requested establishing the entry salary at range 24, step 9 "based on years of experience." "We've advertised for 2 and a half years for a detention nurse," Douglas said, explaining the recruitment challenge.
A board member supported the request but asked how bringing a new hire in at a higher rate would affect equity for existing staff. Manager Welker said the salary placement was appropriate to the candidate's nearly 25 years of nursing experience and that placing the new hire on the correct step of the pay scale would not require immediate adjustments for other employees.
Supervisor Howard moved to approve the revised entry salary and Vice Chairman David seconded; the motion passed by voice vote. County staff will proceed with onboarding and ensure pay placement corresponds to documented experience.
