Graham County approves purchase of two exterior jail cameras to bolster perimeter surveillance

The Graham County Board of Supervisors on the record approved the purchase of two exterior surveillance cameras for the county jail.
TJ Perez of the sheriff's department told the board the cameras would provide more peripheral views of the jail, including employee parking and the northwest outer perimeter fence, improving visibility of activity outside secured areas. "Looking to get approval for, a budgeted capital for 2 PTC cameras that are exterior cameras outside of the jail," Perez said, explaining the intended coverage.
Vice Chairman David raised whether the current cameras were defective or simply out of warranty; Perez said the existing units went out of warranty years ago, APIC (the manufacturer) would replace failed cameras but the county does not carry a maintenance contract because a quoted maintenance plan was prohibitively expensive. Perez said buying replacements as failures occur was more cost-effective than a quoted $30,000-per-year contract.
Manager Welker and the sheriff's commander endorsed the purchase. Welker suggested budgeting to replace multiple cameras annually — "maybe budget for 4 or 5 a year" — so the county would not need to return to the board for routine replacements.
Vice Chairman David moved to approve the purchase and Supervisor Howard seconded; the motion passed by voice vote.
The board's action authorizes procurement of the two cameras; specific vendor contract and pricing will be processed through the county purchasing staff as a next administrative step.
