City staff reported the results of sealed bids for quicklime and soda ash used at the city’s water and wastewater treatment facilities and recommended awarding the low bids.
Staff said bid packs were sent to seven prospective bidders and six sealed bids were received. The low bid for quicklime (proposal 1) was from Greymont LLC at $271.65 per ton for a total of $135,825; the low bid for soda ash (proposal 2) was from Du Bois Chemicals, Inc. at $470 per ton for a total of $282,000. Funds for the purchases were budgeted by the water and wastewater funds and administration recommended awarding both contracts to the low bidders. One quicklime bid was unreadable and disqualified for lack of bid security.
Council approved the recommendations by motion and voice vote. Staff also explained that lime and ash solids settle out during treatment, are collected in lime pits, dry for about a year and are sold to a fertilizer company for use on local farm fields.
