MSD Martinsville expands pre-K, cites $150,000 science-of-reading grant and new elementary curriculum pilot

Assistant Superintendent Susie Lipps presented curriculum and early-childhood updates to the board, highlighting district programming, recent grant funding and a new elementary curriculum pilot.
Lipps said the district expanded its pre-K program by opening a tenth section and a new classroom at Poston Road Elementary; she reported there are 127 pre-K students currently enrolled across the district. She described recent pre-K activities including Project Lead The Way STEM modules and health-habit instruction.
On literacy, Lipps told the board that MSD Martinsville was awarded a competitive science-of-reading grant for $150,000. The grant funds literacy coaches, specialized training, curriculum pilots and reading-based intervention programs. Lipps said that, as a result of these investments, Peregrine Elementary rose from the bottom to the top performing MSD elementary schools on iRead scores.
The district is piloting the evidence-based Amplify CKLA curriculum in elementary grades K–4 and will continue to emphasize the science of reading across instruction. Lipps acknowledged district staff who led the work and said the Central Indiana Educator Service Center (CIESC) is supporting principal and teacher-leader training.
