Board approves consent agenda, personnel actions and multiple donations; grants and naming rights cleared

At its Nov. 18 meeting the Washington County Board of Education approved routine consent items, accepted several donations and approved personnel actions discussed in closed session.

Consent, procurement and renewals: Staff presented seven items reviewed by the purchasing review committee; after a question about renewals the board approved the consent agenda unanimously.

Donations and grants: The board accepted several donations, including a $25,000 donation from Volvo to support VEX robotics programs, $12,524 from SAT fundraising for North Hagerstown High School band uniforms, $150,000 from the PAA Foundation for the Smithsburg High School auditorium renovation, $10,000 from the Hagerstown Area Police Athletic League to seed a Clear Spring High School wrestling program, and $25,231.02 to Boonesborough High School from its booster club for athletics support. All donation motions passed unanimously.

Naming and advertising rights: Under existing MOUs, the board approved assignments of advertising and naming rights for Smithsburg and South Hagerstown High Schools; staff said similar memorandums are in progress for other schools.

Personnel: The board approved personnel actions dated Nov. 18, 2025, that had been discussed in closed session and announced the appointment of Matt Tyke as principal at Sharpsburg Elementary School.

The board also approved a slate of legislative‑representation nominations for the 2026 session (April Zentmayer, Charlie Birkett, Michael Ghesford and Jamie Brown) by motion and unanimous vote earlier in the meeting.
