Council gives first reading to update business license class schedule under Act 176 of 2020

The City of West Columbia council gave unanimous first-reading consideration to an amendment updating the municipal business license class schedule to comply with South Carolina Act 176 of 2020.
Justin Black, presenting the item, said the update is required every odd-numbered year and that the 2025 schedule includes two industry sectors that increased by one class, one new sector added to the list, and four sectors reduced by one class. "As such, 2025 is a time to update our licensing practices to remain in compliance with state law," Justin Black said.
A councilmember asked whether any substantive changes had been made from the previous schedule; Justin Black replied that the changes reflected the adjustments noted above. The council moved, seconded and recorded unanimous first-reading consideration. The item will return for subsequent readings as required by municipal ordinance procedure.
