Middle school student council asks to send monthly representative to RSU 40 board

Students from Madonna Middle School presented to the RSU 40 board on Nov. 6, outlining schedule changes, extracurricular offerings and a request for direct monthly representation at board meetings.

Student presenters described this year’s changes — mixed classes, the addition of sixth grade to the building schedule, guided working lunches and advisory groups — and summarized club offerings that included art club, media club, game club and an after‑school Academy for academic support. Students also described the school’s educator‑in‑residence and Hardy Roots programs for social‑emotional learning and outdoor connection.

In closing the presentation the student council requested that "an MMS student council representative attend board meetings once a month" to keep the board apprised of student concerns and activities. Board members thanked the students for their presentation; one board member said, "I think they've done a super good job presenting to us" and there were no objections to the request recorded in the meeting transcript.

The presentation included named students: Elsie Saranac identified herself as student body historian and Pierce Acorn identified himself as student council president. The board did not take a formal vote on the student council request during the meeting and directed no formal action; follow-up would be coordinated through district administration if the board chooses to formalize a regular student rep attendance schedule.

What’s next: the district administration will coordinate with the board clerk and the school to determine a process and schedule if the board formalizes monthly student representation.
