The Manhasset Board of Education on Dec. 15 adopted updates to its acceptable‑use technology regulation that include a new section on artificial intelligence.

The policy update, presented as a second and final reading by the policy committee, adds a section stating that use of AI (including but not limited to ChatGPT) is an academic‑integrity issue and that district‑approved AI platforms may be used under classroom instructor supervision only after review and approval by the cybersecurity/data‑privacy officer and department heads. The policy limits instructor‑guided implementation to approved programs and establishes checks and department‑level monitoring.

Policy‑committee members and administrators said the change is intended to provide a framework for responsible AI use beginning in January, allow pilot use in model school days and require the district’s data‑privacy officer to vet tools for student privacy and safety. The board recorded a unanimous vote to adopt the changes.

Administrators said departments have already been gathering data on AI use and that the district has access to tools such as NotebookLM for classroom experimentation. The district will push the updated guidance to faculty and monitor classroom implementation to inform any needed policy adjustments.
