The St. Cloud Public School District Board of Education voted to name the new indoor multipurpose athletic facility the "Apex Athletic Center," approving the recommendation of the superintendent-appointed naming committee.
Justin Scalarude, Apollo High School principal, presented the naming process and sample logos. The committee of parents, community members, students and staff had narrowed proposals to two options: "Apex Athletic Center" and "Apex 742 Athletics Center." The facility will provide indoor turf for soccer, softball, lacrosse, practice space for baseball and football, batting cages and golf simulators; construction is planned to begin in May 2026 with tentative completion in April 2027.
Board discussion centered on whether including "742" in the official facility name strengthened district branding or diluted the facility’s standalone identity. Several board members argued to keep the name simple and to use 742 branding elsewhere on the building. Al Dahlgren moved to adopt "Apex Athletic Center," and Heather Weems seconded.
The motion passed; one board member recorded a 'No' vote (Scott Andresen). Board members said the district will still prominently incorporate ISD 742 branding on the building and in signage but preferred a shorter public-facing name.
The board clarified that the vote was to approve the facility name only; logos and final images will be returned to the board for later approval.
