Omaha Public Schools spotlights JROTC Legion of Valor awardees

The Omaha Public Schools board opened Monday’s meeting with a school spotlight honoring JROTC cadets who received the Legion of Valor award.
Superintendent Ray introduced cadets from Benson, Buena Vista, Burke, Central and Westview high schools and noted the award’s national selectivity and criteria: leadership, academic performance, character and community involvement. Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Cindy Sanovich (Benson) described her role as battalion commander and participation in drill teams, color guard and orchestra; she said she is applying for ROTC scholarships and plans to enroll at Creighton University with a long-term goal of law school and service in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
Other cadets described involvement in Raider and drill teams, work or volunteer experiences, and career pathways: Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Jennifer Lemus (Buena Vista) cited Raider and JLab activities; Cadet Jenna Crippen (Burke) noted varsity sports and a future apprenticeship as an Apache mechanic; Cadet Michael Steinhoff (Burke) described plans to pursue aerospace engineering through an Air Force ROTC pathway; Cadet Jamie Jordan (Westview) said she plans to study nursing at Clarkson College.
Board members thanked students and parents for their attendance and praised the JROTC program for leadership development. The segment concluded with the board moving on to regular business, including communications and committee updates.
