Board hears timeline update from state School Finance Review Commission

Dr. Holman said the commission—created by the legislature and convened in Lincoln—adopted operating policies and has set a three-step timeline. Step 1 (now through Dec. 1, 2025) focuses on assembling Nebraska funding facts, identifying shared funding percentages (local, state, federal) for 2022–25, selecting comparison districts and reviewing other states' funding models; the commission will report to the legislature by Dec. 1, 2025. Step 2 (calendar year 2026) will emphasize long-term planning, proposed revisions to the funding model, working groups, and modeling activities with a report due Nov. 1, 2026. Step 3 (2027 and beyond) addresses ongoing management and annual recommendations to the legislature, with an initial report due Nov. 1, 2027.
Dr. Holman noted the governor has completed the commission membership by appointing a certified schoolteacher, Shauna Koger of Arlington Public Schools. He encouraged board members and the public to review commission materials on the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) website and the NDE YouTube channel where full meetings are posted.
What happens next: Dr. Holman said he will continue to provide updates after each commission meeting. The board did not take action on the commission report during this session.
