Omaha school board approves procurement policy first reading, consent agenda and enters closed session

Changes include raising bid thresholds for small-dollar procurements, clarifying language for technology purchases, and expanding use of the construction-manager-at-risk process to certain non-bond construction projects. On behalf of the committee, Mr. Thielen moved to approve the policy for first reading; roll call recorded seven ayes and the motion passed. The board will hold a second reading at a subsequent meeting before final adoption.
The board also approved the consent agenda after Vice President Snipes moved and Miss Kratke seconded approval. An abstention was recorded: President Erdenberger abstained on item I-6(c) citing her role with the Omaha Schools Foundation. Roll call for the consent agenda recorded seven ayes and the motion passed. The consent agenda included reports such as the district surplus online auction (Auction Mill LLC) which yielded $39,642.50, board conference expenses for 2024–25, and the Head Start monthly report for August 2025.
Later in the meeting Miss Snipes moved (seconded by Dr. Holman) that the board move into closed session "for the protection of the public interest and for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of individuals" and to receive legal advice with superintendent, board secretary, chief of staff and legal counsel present. Roll call recorded seven ayes; the board entered closed session at 6:43 p.m., returned at 7:06 p.m., and adjourned at 7:06 p.m.
What happens next: The procurement policy will return for second reading and final adoption at a future meeting. The board record shows no further action on contested library materials during this session.
