Commission continues two pending applications and schedules public charrettes on design standards

At its October meeting the New Bern Historic Preservation Commission continued multiple pending applications and set dates for public outreach on draft design standards.
The commission agreed to continue the applications for 206 and 208 Metcalfe Street to the January regular meeting (January 21). The applicant agreed to extend the statutory 180‑day decision window by 90 days to avoid an automatic denial if scheduling prevented attendance; the extension was noted and the motion to continue carried.
Commissioners also ratified two special public meetings intended as small‑group charrettes to gather comments on proposed HPC design standards. The sessions were scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Stanley White Recreation Center and Monday, Nov. 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. at West Newburn Recreation Center (1225 Pine Tree Drive). The meetings will use discussion groups to collect public input rather than in‑meeting Q&A, and staff will distribute a survey in advance.
Near the end of the meeting the commission also continued 1409 North Pasteur Street to the Nov. 19 regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall because the applicant was out of town. Each continuance was proposed, seconded and carried by the commission.
The continuances and outreach schedule mean the commission will revisit the Metcalfe and Pasteur items at future regular meetings and will hold two focused public sessions to solicit feedback on draft guidance.
